The journey back from alcohol or drug dependency can be a difficult experience for anyone! When life seems out of control, when efforts to change have failed, and when there is a loss of direction and hope, the human spirit wants to give up! To begin recovery we need the Lord’s help every step of the way. Maybe the best thing is to know that others understand and care, and that there is a place to go for true spiritual help!

First of all, can you see your own experience in the following descriptions of a person in the downward pull of addiction?

  • I am not able to control when I begin or stop drinking.
  • I have made repeated efforts to change but have failed.
  • I have wasted years without deciding to get help.
  • My drinking has cost me one or more jobs.
  • I have hurt family and friends by my drinking.
  • Drinking has caused me to lie and steal and cover up.
  • I am burdened down with a lot of guilt and remorse for the things I have done while drinking.
  • I have avoided dealing with important issues in my life while continuing to become intoxicated.
  • I spend more time with other drinkers than with my family and friends.
  • I have had one or more close calls with death because of the consequences of drinking.
  • I try to cover a lot of pain by my drinking.
  • I feel so very far from God and wonder if He can forgive me or help me now.

We can take courage from the words of the Lord Jesus Christ, who said “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible!” Spiritual life is needed to find God’s freedom. It means opening your heart’s door to the Savior, confessing your sins, and believing that His death on the cross paid the full penalty for you before a holy God. Let Him forgive you and make you His child, putting His life within you and giving you the Holy Spirit to direct and empower you.

The time for action is now! A child of God needs to make a clean break with sin and follow a structured program to learn God’s Word. The life principles of God will show us how to live a new life of victory and how to replace sinful habits with good ones that restore our character and enable us to live responsibly to handle the challenges of life without the bottle or drug. We will claim our identity as a true child of God and move forward as obedient disciples of Jesus. Others will see what a change God makes, after we were not able to do it ourselves!
